I remember distinctly the day I drew my first self-portrait in 8th grade art class. Every kid likes to draw but I never knew I was talented until that day. The pencil in my hand seemed to have a mind of its own and somehow I was able to copy the image I saw in the mirror into a graphite version of myself.
It was like magic.
It's still hard for me to explain how I do what I do. Sometimes I step back from a finished painting and I have no idea how I got there. Every time I pick up a paintbrush it seems to have a mind of it's own, just like that pencil in my hand.
Art has been my passion ever since that day in junior high. Who knows where I would be if my teacher hadn't given us that assignment. Or if my junior high had taken art out of our curriculum, like so many schools are doing these days. My art is so much a part of me, I wouldn't be the same without it.
I love what I do, and I love to share what I do. When I create something out of nothing it is inevitable that I will put a part of myself in it. I love the idea of someone hanging one of my creations somewhere in their home and being inspired by it. Most people consider art a luxury, but to me it's a necessity.
"The nature of creativity...in one sense is about giving people something they didn't know they were missing."
